One of our most exciting additions is the student-run coffee shop—a hands-on learning lab where students manage operations, build business skills, and create a welcoming space for connection. It’s more than coffee; it’s community-building in action.

This is part of our larger commitment to keeping students in our schools—where they belong. We’ve brought specialized support back into our district, ensuring students with unique needs can learn alongside their peers, close to home. Every student is a valued part of our school family.

We’re also preparing students for success in today’s world with new programs in e-sports, cybersecurity, and other high-demand tech fields. These are not just electives—they’re real career pathways that build both technical and soft skills like teamwork, strategy, and communication.

At the core of all these initiatives is our belief in the power of inclusive education. Diverse classrooms create stronger communities, where empathy, collaboration, and understanding thrive.

Brewing Confidence & Building Skills: Expanding Real-Life Opportunities in the Hound Hub As we continue shaping the future of “ The New Modern Monessen,” one of our most important responsibilities is preparing every student—not just academically, but for life beyond the classroom. That’s why I’m excited to share two exciting initiatives we’re working on right here in the Hound Hub at the middle/high school, specifically designed to provide meaningful, real-world experiences for our life -skills students. First, we have developed a student-run coffee shop inside the Hound Hub. This space will not only serve fresh coffee and light snacks to staff and students, but more importantly, it will serve as a hands-on learning environment. Recently, I was driving through Eastern Ohio after my son's hockey tournament when something struck me: the landscape was full of shut-down and abandoned steel mills—massive buildings that once stood as symbols of strength and prosperity, now silent and forgotten. The sight stayed with me. It made me ask, What happened to all of them? So, I researched it. And what I found was not just a history lesson-it was a warning. Those mills didn’t fail because people stopped working hard. They collapsed because leadership failed to adapt. Because systems stayed rigid while the world changed around them. They ignored innovation, dismissed new global realities, and clung to "the way we’ve always done it." That refusal to evolve led to their downfall.
