The New Modern Monessen: A New Chapter for Monessen Schools

At Monessen City School District, we are dedicated to creating learning environments that spark curiosity, support innovation, and prepare students for the world beyond our walls. That commitment is coming to life through a series of exciting renovations across our schools—renovations that reflect the vision of The New Modern Monessen.

Innovation Begins at Monessen Elementary

We’re thrilled to announce the transformation of the former library at Monessen Elementary into a dynamic new space called the Pup Hub. This revitalized area will serve as a modern media center, designed to encourage creativity, collaboration, and exploration for our youngest learners.

A key feature of the Pup Hub will be a TV Production Lab built specifically for elementary students. This space will be equipped with age-appropriate technology and tools that allow students to explore storytelling, broadcasting, and digital literacy in a fun and developmentally appropriate way.

In addition, we are creating a STEAM Lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) to provide hands-on learning experiences that build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The STEAM Lab will empower students to experiment, build, and dream big—all while having fun.

New Learning Opportunities at the Secondary Level

The momentum doesn’t stop at the elementary level. At Monessen Middle/High School, we are creating a vibrant new hub for innovation, expression, and real-world learning: the Hound Hub.

This future-ready media center will be supported by several specialized labs and creative spaces:

  • Music Production Lab – Students will have access to industry-standard tools to compose, record, and produce their own music.

  • TV Production Lab – A full broadcasting studio will give students hands-on experience with scripting, filming, and editing video content.

  • E-GAME Lab – This space will bring gaming and learning together, supporting esports, game design, and digital teamwork.

  • Immersive Room – Using cutting-edge technology, this room will allow students to experience virtual simulations, 3D learning environments, and global virtual field trips.

  • Coffee Shop – A new coffee shop inside the Hound Hub will be operated by our life skills students, giving them real-world experience in customer service, money management, and job readiness in a warm, welcoming environment. Copy Center (Exploring Possibility) – We are currently exploring a potential partnership with Sharp Copy to develop a student-supported copy and print center within the Hound Hub. This initiative would create additional workplace training opportunities for life skills students while also serving the school community.

  • Each of these new spaces has been thoughtfully designed to provide students with relevant, engaging experiences that align with 21st-century skills and careers.

Infrastructure and Student Safety

Alongside these instructional upgrades, we are making significant investments in the foundational infrastructure of our buildings:

  • New roofs are being installed at both the elementary and high school buildings to ensure safety, efficiency, and protection from the elements.

  • At the high school, we are replacing outdated HVAC and mechanical systems, greatly improving indoor air quality and climate control for students and staff.

  • We are addressing a structural issue in the high school gymnasium, making the space safer and more reliable for athletic events and physical education.

  • Additionally, drainage improvements are underway around the high school to prevent future water issues and preserve the building’s integrity.

Building a Modern Monessen, Together

These renovations are more than cosmetic upgrades—they are statements of belief. We believe in our students. We believe in their future. And we believe that the spaces they learn in should reflect the limitless potential within each of them.
